After installing Mechapwn, my PS2 Slim was able to play both out-of-region PS2 games and PSX game backups (PSX games needed the SetRegion patch). PS2 games run perfectly and I haven't had any problem with them. My PAL original of Gran Turismo 2 as well as a 16x write speed backup of it also run flawlessly and I haven't noticed any problems in my NTSC backup of Symphony of the Night.
A burned CD with the translation patch for Persona 2: Innocent Sin (SLPS-02100) also works...
