A Couple General PS2 Questions

is there a proper way to turn the slim off? like when you hold down the standby/power button it abruptly stops the disc from spinning. I think this is what's causing scratches on my discs. I don't notice them too much with cds, but I do with dvds. should I eject the disc first, then power off?

also, does anyone know a good, reliable dvd burner for ps2 games? I bought a bd burner a few months ago to test, and all I got were duds.
